Photos of nurses at Sydney baby clinics
Newtown, Alexandria and Bourke Street Baby Clinics
These photos are believed to have been taken in 1914, with the opening of the first baby clinics.
The black and white photographs (NRS-4873) were possibly taken or commissioned by the Department of Public Health and may have formed part of a larger project of photographing health services to children as contemporary photographs exist for other health services.
The purpose of the series appears to be to document the premises occupied by the clinics and to illustrate their functions. The photos feature both internal and external views of the clinics, as well as mothers and babies in waiting rooms, infants receiving care, and mothers being instructed by nurses. While the photographs lack captions, the names of the clinics are handwritten in pencil on the back.
