John Hunter appointed Governor, 1794
On 6 February 1794 Captain John Hunter was appointed to replace Captain Arthur Phillip as Governor. Phillip had been granted leave on 10 December 1792 and returned to England, leaving Captain Francis Grose as the Acting Governor.
Hunter first came to New South Wales in 1788 as second captain, under Governor Phillip, on the Sirius and returned to England in 1792. Although his appointment was due to commence in February 1794 there was an unexplained and lengthy delay in Hunter's departure from England; he returned to the Colony to serve as Governor from 11 September 1795 to 27 September 1800.
