Deceased estates index 1880-1958

The index covers Duty Paid Files and the "Z Series" files for 1880-c.1923, the Pre-A series for 1923-1939, the A series for c.1939-1948 and the B series for 1949-1958.

A note about the Index

The index was compiled from Indexes to registers of deceased estates and not from the lists of files in our collection. There may be entries in the index for which a file has not survived. If the file requested for copying has not survived the payment will be refunded.

When you have located an entry and there is no file number provided (e.g. Pre A 047382 [20/1417]) take a note of the Date Duty Paid and bring this date with you to the Reading Room. The Date Duty Paid will allow staff to locate surviving files using the item lists. You can also check the item lists, arranged by the Date of Duty Paid, to identify the container (box) in which the file should be stored. We cannot determine whether the file has survived until the container is checked.

The over 300,000 index entries from the indexes to the A series and B series files have been added to this index as a result of our partnership with Ancestry.com. Please note that in these later index entries abbreviations are frequently used for first names, middle names and occupations. It is recommended that you try varying or abbreviating your search terms if a first search is unsuccessful.
