Weaving with Steven Russell and Phyllis Stewart
Celebrate NAIDOC Week in this special workshop with master weavers Steven Russell and Phyllis Stewart.
This workshop is presented alongside the exhibition The People’s House at the Museum of Sydney, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House. For the exhibition, master weavers Steven Russell, son of Esme Timbery, and Phyllis Stewart, were commissioned by Museums of History NSW to create a woven response – Untitled (woven Sydney Opera House) – to Timbery’s Untitled (shellworked Sydney Opera House) (2002). Both artworks will be on display at the Museum of Sydney from 1 July to 12 November 2023.
In this intimate limited-capacity workshop, participants will weave their own miniature Opera House sails to take home, guided by Russell and Stewart. The workshop is open to everyone, and all materials are provided.
