Just Not Australian: Unpacked

Jon Campbell's practice fuses text with abstracted and geometric elements to playfully explore ciphers of colloquial language and culture in contemporary society. His is an ongoing exploration of the visual potential of language, embedding meaning in negative space by hiding words within the surface of the image for us to decipher.

Nell's practice embodies an ongoing interest in contemporary manifestations of spiritual traditions; life, death and rebirth; the history and magic of materials; and rock ‘n’ roll’s transcendental potential. Growing up in the rural town of Maitland where music and religion were integral to her childhood, Nell’s works in Just Not Australian explore the nexus between these seemingly disparate arenas; their common iconography, symbolism and fervour.

Raquel Ormella frames her practice as a consideration of social and political action; working with textiles, drawing and sewing, she mines contemporary national identity, environmentalism and human relations with the natural world. Her practice encompasses material forms often associated with social and political activism, such as banners, flags, video, pamphlets and zines. She is interested in the collision of art and activism and the complex relationship between humans and the natural environment

Working across drawing, printmaking, painting and installation, Ryan Presley reflects on his Indigenous and Scandinavian heritage to mount a larger enquiry into the ideologies and systems of power that have shaped Australian history. Byre-examining and subverting ideas surrounding value, currency and authority, Presley addresses how segments of humanity strive for, maintain and enact control and dominance over others.
