Natural dyeing workshop with Leah Giblin

This spring, join us for a bespoke fabric-dyeing workshop with renowned textile designer and environmental advocate Leah Giblin.

Learn how to harness the beautiful colour palette of nature using natural dye extracts, food waste and foraged materials to create deep and lasting colours on natural-fibre fabrics.

The workshop will include an introductory walking tour of the Vaucluse House estate led by Museums of History NSW Horticulturalist, Anita Rayner. Learn about some of the beautiful plants and flowers that grow on the property and how they can be utilised to produce natural dyes that you’ll use in the workshop.

Participants will create their own natural-dyed silk scarf and leave the workshop with recipes and the skills to create their own pieces at home.

About Leah Giblin

Leah Giblin is a bespoke textile designer and costume artist with a focus on sustainability, recycling, waste reduction and non-chemical processes. Leah’s label – Day Keeper – is designed and manufactured locally in Sydney, with a range of ‘slow’ fashion products and accessories. Leah is also applying these design principles to her new range of natural burial garments and shrouds.

Leah’s two great interests have always been clothes-making and the environment. She began with a degree in Environmental Studies, while always sewing and making in her spare time. Her love of costume and historical fashion developed over time and eventually drew her to the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), where she completed a costume degree. She followed that with ten years in the film and television industry, working as a costume maker, stylist, costume designer and standby. During that time she also collaborated with visual artists Mikala Dwyer, Koji Ryui, Lauren Brincat, Agatha Gothe-Snape and Justene Williams.
