Significance matters

Published on Wednesday 26 June 2024

As part of an ongoing partnership with Museums & Galleries of NSW, our Curatorial and Digital teams have been hard at work making a suite of vocational videos that explore the importance of assessing and communicating the significance of museum collections. The videos have been developed primarily for staff and volunteers working in small to medium-sized museums, particularly in regional and remote NSW.

It is important that we understand as much as possible about the objects and collections we hold so that we can share these stories with our communities, now and into the future. Using examples from MHNSW’s collections, we explore what ‘significance’ is and guide viewers through the assessment process – from researching the history of the object to writing a statement of significance.

These two videos have been produced in consultation with Museums & Galleries of NSW for volunteers and staff working in museums across the state. Significance matters is the third suite of videos in this series.

We are delighted to launch these videos today.
