Meroogal's exterior: A labour of love

Published on Friday 28 July 2023

After an intensive eight-week endeavour of expert knowledge and meticulous care, the exterior painting works of Meroogal, a treasured heritage building, have been successfully completed.

This intricate restoration project presented its fair share of challenges, including the need to ensure safe access to high areas with evident deterioration. Additionally, the team skilfully managed localised timber repairs on significant joinery, laying the groundwork for subsequent painting works. A delicate balancing act was undertaken to preserve the building's heritage fabric while providing ample paint protection.

The specialised painters shared the sentiment that through the project they have fallen in love with the house.

Meroogal's restored North and West facades are testament to the harmonious blend of expertise and respect for heritage. This labour of love ensures that the cherished building continues to grace its surroundings for generations to come.

While studying, Maria Elena developed a great interest in the history and evolution of architecture, as well as the complexity of caring for built heritage: ‘Conservation became my focus. As a young professional I worked in the Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural, a government institution that promotes, guides and fosters cultural heritage in Venezuela. I worked as an assistant architect on the adaptive re-use of an 18th-century villa to become the institution’s headquarters. I’m an advocate for the re-use of heritage architecture when it prolongs a building’s life’.
