If you access content forming part of the State Archives Collection, then different conditions apply as to how you may use that content. Where the content is still protected by copyright, the following conditions apply:

• State Archives Reading Room

You may make copies of records at the State Archives Reading Room for the purposes of research or study, but you will require permission from MHNSW to make use of the records for any other purpose. If copyright in the record is not owned by MHNSW, you will need to obtain this permission from the copyright holder directly.

• Digitised records

You may make copies of records that MHNSW makes available in a digitised format for the purposes of research or study, but you will require permission from MHNSW to make use of the records for any other purpose. If copyright in the record is not owned by MHNSW, you will need to obtain this permission from the copyright holder directly.

• No known copyright

We may be unaware of any current copyright restrictions on some material held in our collections. This may be because the term of copyright has expired or that copyright does not apply to this type of work. The majority of images with ‘no known copyright’ are images where Crown copyright has expired. Check on Flickr to see some of these images from our collections. If you access content forming part of our Caroline Simpson Collection and Museums Collections, then different conditions apply as to how you may use that content. Where the content is still protected by copyright, the following conditions apply:

• Caroline Simpson Library Reading Room

You may make copies of material for the purposes of research or study, depending on the condition of the material, but you will require permission to make use of the material for any other purpose. If copyright in the material is not owned by MHNSW, you will need to seek permission from the copyright holder.

• Digitised material

Digitised collection material published to digital repositories are subject to terms of usage. Usage and licensing provisions are documented in the catalogue record. Your use of the material must comply with those terms.

• Objects catalogue

Items in the objects catalogue list the creator of the object. You must obtain permission from us or from the creator of the object before reproducing the object.

• Pictures catalogue

You may use images for the purposes of research or study, but you will require permission to use them for any other purpose.

Where an image is in copyright and the copyright is not held by Museums of History NSW, you will be required to obtain permission to reproduce the image from the copyright holder and provide written documentation to Museums of History NSW before the image can be released. We will endeavour to assist you with contact details of copyright holders where possible.

You must comply with any additional terms and conditions provided to you with the image, including the terms of captioning for the image.

You must not crop, alter, manipulate or obscure an image in any way without the permission of MHNSW or the copyright owner.

MHNSW reserves the right to refuse to supply material or to withdraw approval, where the context of the reproduction is deemed to be unsuitable, inappropriate or contrary to the interests of the creator or MHNSW.

• Requesting digital copies of images

Low-resolution versions of images held in our the Caroline Simpson Collection are available free of charge for purposes of research and study and can be downloaded from our website through the Pictures catalogue.

Supply of high-resolution TIFF files, for reproduction for private use, will incur an administrative charge of $44 per image, including GST. Additional charges may apply for commercial use.

Standard processing time for image requests is up to 15 working days. Urgent requests are subject to staff workload and may incur an additional fee.

We welcome links from your site to this website. If you plan to create a link, please follow these guidelines:

• Links to the MHNSW website should preferably be to the homepage or other high-level webpage. Linking to other pages may pose a risk, as the page may move or become unavailable.
