Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden Tours
Join us for a tour of Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden and learn how a disused railway dump was transformed into a public garden oasis.
For more than 30 years, Wendy Whiteley has been guerrilla gardening a small patch of government-owned land next to her home in Lavender Bay. After the death of her husband, artist Brett Whiteley, and then her daughter, Arkie, Wendy threw her grief and creativity into gardening, creating a horticultural masterpiece. This guerrilla garden is Wendy’s living artwork, designed with colour, form and light.
The tour of the garden is led by Ian Curdie, a long-term volunteer gardener. Participants will explore the garden and learn about its horticultural and artistic design, the story behind its creation, and the challenges of maintaining and protecting this unique public asset.
