Located in the historic precinct of Macquarie Street, this handsome Georgian-style building designed by convict architect Francis Greenway is one of the most significant survivors from Australia’s colonial period.
Please note this property will be closed to events from January 2023 to June 2024.
A brief history
A UNESCO World Heritage–listed site in the heart of historic Sydney, the Hyde Park Barracks is an extraordinary living record of early colonial Australia. Originally built to house convicts, the Barracks has also served as an immigration depot, asylum, law courts and government offices. Today it is a cutting-edge museum that tells the story of those who crossed its threshold, as well as Aboriginal communities profoundly impacted through colonial expansion.
