Elizabeth Bay House

One of the most splendid private houses ever built in Australia

Elizabeth Bay House is one of Sydney’s best-kept secrets, situated high above Elizabeth Bay with majestic views across Sydney Harbour and beyond, and just a few minutes from the city centre.

A brief history

Elizabeth Bay House is a superb example of 19th-century architecture in a magnificent setting overlooking Sydney Harbour. Built by the fashionable architect John Verge and occupied by colonial secretary Alexander Macleay and his family from1839 to1845, Elizabeth Bay House was known as the ‘finest house in the colony’. It has been elegantly furnished to the Macleay period and is a stunning venue for business events, intimate dinners, cocktail parties, weddings, film and photography.
