Voices from the Past - History Week Live Event

About the program

What can we learn from the voices from the past? How were people’s lives different? What can we discover when we examine real objects that they used?

Join MHNSW for History Week in this free interactive online event on the 2023 theme Voices from the Past. In this session, suitable for stages 1-3 you will be taken to three different historic houses in NSW - Rouse Hill Estate, Vaucluse House and the Hyde Park Barracks. You will hear from the people who lived there and find out how their lives were different in the past. You will meet the farm workers’ children at Rouse Hill Estate, Annie and Ena Sherwood and see what jobs they did at home. You will hear from a descendant of Irish orphan Catherine Fox, an immigrant woman who stayed at the Hyde Park Barracks in the 1800s. Finally, you will visit the Wentworth's family home in Vaucluse and learn about some of the jobs their servants did. We will conclude by leaving the class with an activity to make your own bees wax candle, similar to those used in the past.
