Dated c.1870 to c.1960

These glass negatives are dated c.1870 to c.1960. Some of them are digitised. The negatives record the construction of wharves and adjoining facilities in Sydney Harbour; ferry wharves and passenger amenities; views of Port Jackson; different types of ships and vessels; diagrams of technical systems; shipping movements; navigational aids such as buoys and beacons; rail work, tenements; roadways, housing and buildings in the harbour area including warehouses and boatsheds; road construction; reclamation works; equipment; damaged vessels (including on slipways); harbour-side pools; and demolition sites (including wharves to combat rats and the plague).

George Street (north) demolition site. Commissariat Building. On a shop front in the row of shops at the right can be read the word REXOPHONES. This was a popular gramophone brand name made in Australia and sold from many outlets. Number 177 George Street, was owned by George Wollaston who was a REXOPHONE dealer. This shop was opposite where the Museum of Contemporary Arts is in 2006. Note the filled rubble construction of the old wall.

Dredging work at Adelaide Steamship Company (AdSteam) wharf at Simmons Point, Mort Bay. Much of this wharf stood in 2005. The ship is AdSteam’s SS NOORA which served the company from 1924 to 1956. In the foreground is a loaded spoil barge with another waiting alongside the ship. In the background to the right of NOORA is Rountree’s (floating) Dock with a steam trawler inside. At far right is a steam ferry at Sydney Ferries Corporation’s Balmain base (still in use in 2006). The date is the middle to late 1930s, shown by the colour of the ferry funnel which was changed from all black in this period.

Construction of the ‘Blue room’ at the launch pound on Goat Island. This building was at the western end of the pound on the northern side of the island and was used as amenities for the Sydney Harbour Trust’s launch men. It was demolished in 1990 or 1991.

The vessel appears to be a steam- driven oil tanker of a standard war-built type with an anti-aircraft gun platform still in place high up on the right of the ship’s bridge (possibly PELLICULA).

Lightship BRAMBLE with RAN [Royal Australian Navy] training ship TINGIRA in Rose Bay at rear. BRAMBLE was installed as a light vessel near the Sow and Pigs Reef in 1877 and was retired in 1912. She was later used as a copra lighter by Lever Bros. and, in 1937, was reconstructed as a pseudo replica of HMS SUPPLY (Phillip’s First Fleet) for the 1938 Sesqui-centenary. q.v. Following the celebration, BRAMBLE reverted to work as a copra barge for Levers and was in use during the 1950s. Her disposal seems not to have been recorded.
