Conserving the archives: a bespoke donor experience

On Thursday 14 March, MHNSW donors enjoyed a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the NSW State Archives Collection at the Western Sydney Records Centre. During the tour, donors had the opportunity to view some of the rarest and most intriguing items in the vast collection, including documents from the earliest period of colonial settlement, glass-plate negatives from the 1900s, and the last will and testament of prominent colonial statesman William Charles Wentworth.
The conservation lab and digitisation studio play critical roles in preserving historical documents for current and future generations to access, learn from, and gain a greater appreciation of the history of NSW. Donors heard from our expert conservators and skilled digitisation team about the meticulous processes involved in conserving and digitising historical documents. Learning about the dedication and expertise required to maintain and disseminate archival material was truly enlightening.
