Liverpool State Hospital & Home guide
This guide provides an overview of the main series of patient records in our collection for Liverpool Asylum for the Infirm and Destitute (1862-1913) and Liverpool State Hospital and Home (1913-1961).
Administrative overview
Liverpool Asylum was originally established as a branch of the Sydney Benevolent Society in 1851. The Sydney Benevolent Asylum has an index to Sydney Benevolent Asylum admissions and discharges 1857-1900 available online.
The Colonial Government took control of the Asylum in 1862. The Asylum provided refuge for infirm and destitute men. Those able to assist in the Asylum's farm operations and workshop were paid a small daily wage.
In 1913 the name changed to Liverpool State Hospital and Home. The institution closed in 1950.
About the records
In November 2000 the City of Liverpool and District Historical Society returned to NSW State Archives a number of records from the Liverpool Asylum/State Hospital that had been in its custody since the closure of the Hospital. We acknowledge and thanks the Society for the return of these important records to official custody. These records are included in the listing below. Many of the surviving records of the Liverpool Asylum/State Hospital and Home are incomplete and provide brief details about inmates.
