Work experience with the Learning team

Are you a Year 10 or Year 11 history student interested in working in museums? The Learning team at Museums of History NSW is running a work experience program designed to provide students with a glimpse into the inner workings of a museum!

The week-long program, running from 23 to 27 November 2026, will provide students with an understanding of what it’s like to work in a museum environment and as part of a wider team.

The program will offer Year 10 or Year 11 history students the opportunity to learn from museum staff, shadow the Learning team and observe learning programs with real school groups. During the week, students will visit multiple historic sites throughout Sydney to encounter diverse histories and perspectives and gain hands-on, practical work experience in the sector. They will discover what it’s like to work at a state cultural institution with iconic museums, rich collections, and unforgettable heritage sites.

This program will include:

• observing learning programs at various sites
• assisting with equipment checks and program set-up
• helping with administrative tasks
• behind-the-scenes opportunities across the organisation
• attending team meetings

The week-long program will provide students with an understanding of what it’s like to work in a museum environment and as part of a wider team.
