Vaucluse House Creative and Cultural Residency 2025–26

Discover works created during the inaugural Creative and Cultural Residency at Vaucluse House.

The one-year residency provided time, space and inspiration for four NSW-based creatives to explore the site’s layered histories, architecture, gardens and broader cultural landscape on Birrabirragal and Gadigal Country.

Textile artist Henrietta Cheshire, sound artist and researcher Philip Samartzis, visual artist Diana Baker Smith and writer Lucie Stevens worked from studio spaces in the former caretaker’s cottage. The residency offered each artist the opportunity to develop their practice through sustained engagement with the estate and its surroundings. Their diverse creative responses consider different aspects of place, from the natural environment and colonial histories to memory, sound and storytelling.

The display offers a glimpse into each artist’s individual practice and the ways in which time spent at Vaucluse House shaped their work.

Free entry. The works are presented in the stables and in the house.
