Sketching memory with Dennis Golding

Cameron Stead is a Sydney-based visual artist whose practice encompasses painting, installation and multimedia. His work responds to an expanded idea of self-portraiture and often draws attention to the dualisms and paradoxes played out in everyday life, as well as in the art-making process itself. Stead regularly engages with a range of materials in the place of paint, such as latex, plastic, steel and light, to explore the conceptual, symbolic and physical limitations of an object.

Stead was the winner of the revered Kilgour Prize in 2017 and was also featured in Vogue Living as an ‘up-and-coming artist to know in 2018’. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the National Art School, as well as a Bachelor of Communication from the University of Newcastle.

Dennis Golding is a Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist from the north-west of NSW, born and raised in Sydney. Working in a range of mixed media, including painting, video, photography and installation, Golding critiques social, political and cultural representations of race and identity. His practice is drawn from his own experiences living in urban environments and through childhood memories.

Golding was surrounded by art during his upbringing in an Aboriginal community in urban Redfern (often referred to as ‘The Block’). As a young child, he watched his mother and grandmother paint on large canvas and sheen fabrics. He later developed his professional practice in art school through mentorships with leading curators, educators and artists. Golding graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at UNSW Art & Design in 2019 and now works independently as an artist and curator.
