Members Hour: Hyde Park Barracks

Welcome to Members Hour at the Hyde Park Barracks.

A UNESCO World Heritage–listed site in the heart of contemporary Sydney, the Barracks is an extraordinary record of the living legacy of colonial Australia. Built to house convicts, it also later served as a women’s immigration depot and asylum, and then as law courts and government offices.

Museum expert Scott Cumming will lead you through this fascinating and complex site. Alternatively, you are welcome to explore the property at your leisure, before it opens to the public.

Members get more: Get 10% off at the museum shop. Plus enjoy 10% off dining at the Bullion Store, located next door at The Mint.

A short history of the Hyde Park Barracks

In the early 19th century, the Hyde Park Barracks was the central convict institution and crossroads for tens of thousands of convicts shuffled back and forth throughout the colony. It's now on the World Heritage list, recognised among the world’s most important cultural heritage places linked to forced migration, colony building and convict culture.
