Architect-led tours of the new Sydney Fish Market

Join us on a tour of the new Sydney Fish Market and hear from the designers and architects behind this major civic landmark, 3XN GXN in association with BVN Architecture and ASPECT Studios.

The new Sydney Fish Market opened in January 2026 as the largest fish market in the southern hemisphere. The project was the result of an international design competition. Located at Blackwattle Bay, the 3.6-hectare building integrates a wholesale market, retail fishmongers, restaurants and cafes, with an expected 6 million visitors a year.

The design carefully separates circulation flows, so the daily operations of a working fish market coexist safely with public visitors. Twenty-six lifts service four distinct levels, enabling seamless movement of product and personnel between an underwater basement, trading floors and administrative offices. Expansive glazed facades create strong visual connections to the harbour, while generous external stairs ascend each face of the building’s perimeter, guiding visitors into the heart of the market.

An undulating 20,000-square-metre roof composed of 594 glued laminated timber beams and 407 pyramidal aluminium cassettes lined with solar panels harvests rainwater, generates solar power and provides natural ventilation, reducing potable water consumption by 50 per cent. The project has achieved 5 Star Green Star certification.
