Working Waterfront

Susannah Place Guided Tour

This tour will be available from 23 April 2026.

Many families’ livelihoods were tied to the ebbs and flows of Sydney’s working waterfront.

What did it mean to live with the harbour just beyond the back doors of Susannah Place? Men worked as wharf labourers and coal lumpers, taking whatever shifts they could secure. Work was uncertain and income was irregular. Families adapted, taking in lodgers and sharing already crowded rooms to make ends meet.

On this tour through 58 Gloucester Street, explore the close connection between home and harbour. Step inside to understand the rhythms of a working harbour – and the families who lived at its edge.
