The Grocer's Shop
Susannah Place Guided Tour
Before supermarkets and shopping centres, the corner grocer was the heart of the neighbourhood.
For almost 90 years, a succession of grocers traded from the front room of 64 Gloucester Street. Behind large street-facing windows, enticing displays attracted passers-by – and inside, customers exchanged local gossip as goods were weighed and packaged.
Step into the re-created 1915 shop and meet two of the families who ran this small but vital business at Susannah Place. Ring the counter bell, weigh goods, and listen to the memories of the former residents who stood behind the counter.
Accessibility
This event is not accessible. There are narrow, steep flights of stairs throughout the museum, and no air-conditioning.
