Unearthing the skull-shaped pipe

Look what I found!

Archaeologist Denis Gojak shares the excitement of finding this spectacular pipe bowl in the shape of a skull at the site of the first Government House.

The pipe was manufactured around 1845 by Duméril in Saint-Omer, northern France, shipped to Sydney and then lost during the demolition of the house. It lay underground for almost 150 years, until Denis excavated it in 1983.
