3D scanning: Archaeology from the site of First Government House

Deadline: 10am Monday 24 March 2025

This internship offers the opportunity for a museum studies or curatorial student with an understanding of museum interpretation principles to gain an understanding of how MHNSW uses technology to capture in 3D our museum objects, to enhance audiences’ experience and understanding of our collections.

This project will focus on digitising items from the First Government House Archaeology collection to create assets that can be used in research, exhibitions, digital interactives, multimedia, website content, learning programs and more.

Working with the Senior 3D Designer, the intern will gain hands-on experience of a variety of 3D scanning methods, such as photogrammetry, structured light scanning, and 3D computer modelling. The intern will document in 3D a number of objects and will create a catalogue of items captured. The intern will work within a multidisciplinary team including collection management, curatorial and research.

This internship would suit a student with basic photography skills and an interest in learning new technology.

See 3D models of the archaeological dog skeleton and items from the Justice & Police Museum collection for examples of this work.

Please read the Project Outline for details on how to apply.
