About the records

These registers were created by the Civil Service Board, which was established under the Civil Service Act, 1884. The Board’s responsibilities included conducting qualifying examinations for appointment and promotion, publishing an annual staff list, and presenting a list of qualified persons for each vacant position to the Minister, and in general, be the central controlling authority of the various departments. The Civil Service Board was dissolved and replaced by the Public Service Board under the Public Service Act, 1895.

Information recorded in the registers can include registered number of appointment, date from which appointment is effective, name, age, position, Department, office, date of first appointment, details of transfers, salary, date of notification of appointment and how notified whether by Gazette notice (entered in black) or by Departmental notification (entered in red).

This index records: employees name, date, department, and date appointed.
